Growing up, it was almost an unspoken code: if a woman cut her hair, something serious had happened. A breakup. A divorce. A meltdown. A big life shift. It became a joke among my friends “She cut her hair? Ah. Life has happened.” We'd giggle and nod like seasoned philosophers. We believed no woman just cut her hair. She was going through... or coming out of something.
But this morning, as I caught my reflection, I burst into laughter. Because guess what? I cut my hair. And I’m growing new hair. Me. Aunty.🤣
The one life has happened to and continues to happen through. And you know what? It doesn't even matter what the reason was anymore. Whether it was a bold decision, a quiet rebellion, or just something I felt in my spirit… life is simply happening. And I’m living it, fully.
Now I understand those women. I really do. There's something sacred and powerful about standing in front of a mirror, letting go of what was, and choosing a new beginning with a pair of scissors or clippers. Haircuts are not just about style. They’re about shedding weight emotional, mental, sometimes spiritual. They say, “I'm done with pretending. I’m done with holding on. I’m done with the old story.”
A haircut is a soft kind of rebellion.
It’s acceptance.
It’s courage in strands.
It’s saying, “Let’s start again,” even if the world still expects you to carry on like nothing happened.
When you cut your hair, you are in charge. You’ve made peace with change whether it brings joy or chaos. You stop caring too much about the noise. You're lighter, bolder, maybe even a little reckless... in the best way possible. You may cry that first night or strut like you own the world. Either way, you're owning your story.
So now, when I see an aunty who’s cut her hair, I don't whisper or joke. I pause. I nod with deep respect. Because now I know she is going through a lot and overcoming a lot. She’s choosing herself. She’s doing the brave thing. And whether it’s a fresh start or a silent surrender, she’s doing it with grace.
To all the women walking around with freshly cut hair and full hearts I see you. I honour your courage. Whether you did it with tears in your eyes or a glass of wine in hand, I get it now.
Aunty has cut her hair.
And she’s never been more beautiful.
🥰
